Libraries

Libraries staffed and supported by the University exist on all campuses. The UCSF LibraryÕs holdings include a permanent collection of over 875,000 volumes spanning every phase of the biological and physical sciences as well as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing. The new central library, opened in 1994 at the Moffitt-Long campus, provides state-of-the-art digital resources. In addition to the leading biomedical journals in print form, more than 5,500 periodicals representing all areas of the health sciences and social sciences are available online. Its Interactive Learning Center consists of 24 Macintosh and 32 Windows-based computers as well as software, scanners, laser players, printers, etc. The Library is also networked for wireless connection. The Library is part of the systemwide California Digital Library (CDL), through which one can access nearly 200 citation and abstract databases and 36 online reference texts and datasets. Most of the CDL electronic journals are now linked to CDL-hosted databases. Thus, when a user searches the Medline database and retrieves a citation to a journal for which the CDL has access, the user is able to retrieve the full content of the journal immediately. Agreements with vendors of commercially supplied databases also allow additional links into CDL databases for easy discovery of locations for print materials. Many of these resources are open to the public as well as members of the University.
